چکیده

Traditionally, dependency theory has been developed for uninterpreted data. Specifically, the only assumption that is made about the data domains is that data values can be compared for equality. However, data is often interpreted and there can be advantages in considering it as such, for instance obtaining more compact representations as done in constraint databases. This paper considers dependency theory in the context of interpreted data. Specifically, it studies constraintgenerating dependencies. These are a generalization of equality-generating dependencies where equality requirements are replaced by constraints on an interpreted domain. The main technical results in the paper are a general decision procedure for the implication and consistency problems for constraint-generating dependencies, and complexity results for specific classes of such dependencies over given domains. The decision procedure proceeds by reducing the dependency problem to a decision problem for the constraint theory of interest, and is applicable as soon as the underlying constraint theory is decidable. The complexity results are, in some This work was supported by NATO Collaborative Research Grant CRG 940110 and by NSF Grant IRI-9110581. Chasing Constrained

We investigate the implication problem for constrained tuple-generating dependencies (CTGDs), the extension of tuple-and equality-generating dependencies that permits expression of semantic relations (constraints) on variables. The implication problem is central to identifying redundant integrity constraints, checking integrity constraints on constraint databases, detecting the independence of ...

Detection and Exploitation of Functional Dependencies for Model Generation BROES DE CAT AND MAURICE BRUYNOOGHE

Recent work in Answer Set Programming has integrated ideas from Constraint Programming. This has led to a new eld called ASP Modulo CSP (CASP), in which the ASP language is enriched with constraint atoms representing constraint satisfaction problems. These constraints have a more compact grounding and are handled by a new generation of search algorithms. However, the burden is on the modeler to...

Improving Success Ratio in Multi-Constraint Quality of Service Routing

Multi-constraint quality-of-service routing will become increasingly important as the Internet evolves to support real-time services. It is well known however, that optimum multi-constraint QoS routing is computationally complex, and for this reason various heuristics have been proposed for routing in practical situations. Among these methods, those that use a single mixed metric are the mo...

Semantic Optimization Techniques for Preference Queries

Preference queries are relational algebra or SQL queries that contain occurrences of the winnow operator (find the most preferred tuples in a given relation). Such queries are parameterized by specific preference relations. Semantic optimization techniques make use of integrity constraints holding in the database. In the context of semantic optimization of preference queries, we identify two fu...

On generating near-optimal tableaux for conditional functional dependencies

Conditional functional dependencies (CFDs) have recently been proposed as a useful integrity constraint to summarize data semantics and identify data inconsistencies. A CFD augments a functional dependency (FD) with a pattern tableau that defines the context (i.e., the subset of tuples) in which the underlying FD holds. While many aspects of CFDs have been studied, including static analysis and...
